David Duchovny is coming to New Zealand - but not to act
10 Aug, 2017 7:00am
David Duchovny will embark on his first New Zealand tour in February.
David Duchovny is mostly known for his daring TV roles - as Fox Mulder in The X-Files, Hank Moody in Californication, or as Denise in the current season of Twin Peaks.
But it isn't a TV show or movie that will bring Duchovny to New Zealand in February.
The 57-year-old will be coming under a completely different guise.
Duchovny will be performing here as part of a tour behind his new album, with two shows planned at Auckland's Powerstation on February 20, and Wellington's San Fran on February 21.
In his first tour of the country, he'll play songs from his 2015 debut, Hell or High Water, and his new album, Every Third Thought, which he's currently working on and is due out later this year.
That makes Duchovny a busy man - he's currently starring in the new season of David Lynch's Twin Peaks, and the 11th season of his sci-fi hit show, The X-Files, is planned to air later this year or early next year.
His music, however, appears to be a new priority for Duchovny and he is "currently bunkered down in the studio" prepping his sophomore record.
Critics will be hoping it improves on Hell or High Water after it received mixed reviews, with many saying it was an album that paid tribute to better acts.
"You have to emulate before you can innovate, and as Duchovny continues to hone his musical chops, perhaps he'll transform the sounds of his heroes into something that's distinctly his own," said Consequence of Sound.
But the New York Daily News described it as a "credible rock album" and praised his singing as "sullen, inward, and broken".
Tickets for his show are on sale from August 14.

David Duchovny emerged to become one of the most highly acclaimed actors in Hollywood as the star in one of the most well renowned television series of the past two decades, ‘The X-Files’. His name is also synonymous with television shows such as ‘Aquarius’, ‘Californication’, ‘Twin Peaks’, amongst cult feature films, ‘Kalifornia’, ‘The Rapture’ and ‘Julia Has Two Lovers’.
The cult phenomenon of ‘The X-Files’ made David Duchovny a household name and fixated millions of self-proclaimed ‘X-Philes’ on the brilliant and sullen FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder, as he and his partner explored unbelievable and out-of-this-world cases. Duchovny’s remarkable performance on the show earned him the title of ‘Zeitgeist Icon’. Reuniting for an eleventh season in 2017, ‘The X-Files’ and David Duchovny continue their legacy and will once again have millions hooked!
Adding to the already extraordinary list of accomplishments, David Duchovny introduced the world to his music with his evocative debut album, Hell Or Highwater, a rock album that features Duchovny’s musings on pride, loss and lots of remorse. The album pays homage to his musical heroes: Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Leonard Cohen and R.E.M.

David Duchovny's music career makes him laugh
15 Feb, 2018 10:00am
David Duchovny hits the studio during recording sessions for his new album, Every Third Thought.

Chris Schulz is the Deputy Head of Entertainment.
chris.schulz@nzherald.co.nz @chris__schulz
David Duchovny's coming to New Zealand, and his visit's got nothing to do with The X-Files. Chris Schulz asks him for the truth.
Wondering how to make David Duchovny laugh these days? Just ask him if he wants to headline Coachella.
TimeOut's question about his musical aspirations makes the 57-year-old cackle down the phone like Mulder standing over the remains of an alien autopsy.
It turns out the star of shows such as The X-Files and Californication doesn't have festival-sized ambitions for his new career, one that recasts him as a budding rock star.
In fact, he doesn't have any ambitions at all.
"It's already gone way further than I ever thought it would go. The fact that I recorded one song to me is impossible. The fact that I recorded an album is impossible. The fact that I can perform live is ridiculous," he says.
"I don't have any plans for it. I'm just constantly pleasantly surprised."
So far, Duchovny's late-career pivot has resulted in two albums of uber-earnest dad-rock: 2015's Hell or High Water, and last week's Every Third Thought.
He's also on tour, performing at Auckland's Powerstation next Tuesday.
So how did all this happen? Duchovny says he started writing songs "about four years ago", which is around the same time as his split from his wife, Tea Leoni.
Many of those songs were "written in trailers, some just in my apartment".
He says: "They're written all over the place. The great thing about music is I can do it anytime, all the time."
Fans of Duchovny's main gig, as jaded FBI agent Mulder in The X-Files, don't need to panic. He isn't putting his music career first.
He's just wrapped shooting the show's seriously great eleventh season and is weighing up his options for the rest of the year, mentioning directing and producing roles as well as acting.
His upcoming Australasian tour will take just three weeks. It's his first time here. "I've never been. I'm really eager to get there," he says about New Zealand.
"We're working out the kinks so we don't disappoint you all."
Unfortunately, the kinks aren't the problem. Critics have delivered some decidedly average opinions on Duchovny's music, with many taking aim at his lyrics and song composition.
Many criticise his voice. A recent Associated Press review claimed he "croaked like a dying frog". Duchovny tells TimeOut he's been getting lessons and is getting better.
But it begs the question: who's showing up to his shows - curious X-Files fans or genuine music lovers?
Duchovny doesn't care. "It doesn't matter to me," he says. "You're not going to like my songs just because you like my acting, and hopefully you won't dislike my songs because you dislike my acting."
"I just want you to listen to it and then you can make up your own mind."

Re: David Duchovny is coming to New Zealand - but not to act
Why seeing David Duchovny live may make me lose my respect for him
DARREN BEVAN
Last updated 08:22, February 19 2018
OPINION: In terms of the tussles of daily life, this one definitely falls into the "First World Problems" basket.
Icon David Duchovny, aka Fox Mulder of The X Files, hits New Zealand this week for his first ever shows in Auckland and Wellington.
You didn't know Agent Mulder was a rock singer?
N/A
David Duchovny takes in Auckland and Wellington for two tour dates this week.
Well, to coin a phrase, The Truth is Out There - but I sort of wish the musical talent was as well.
Mulder and Scully were heroes to me in my formative years.
N/A
As laconic G-man "Spooky" Mulder, Duchovny found fame in the 1990s with The X-Files.
Our student flat would gather round the TV and gorge ourselves on the conspiracy theories laid bare weekly by Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny's G-men characters.
We'd spend hours after discussing what was really going on in the show - what the alien abductions were about, what the standalone episodes with their horror elements actually meant - but never really whether these two would get together.
Now, with some 25 years passed since the series came out, Mr Duchovny is heading to New Zealand to take his musical talent to the potential masses.
SASCHA STEINBACH / SUPPLIED
American actor and singer David Duchovny performs during his 'Hell or Highwater' tour in 2016.
He's got three albums under his belt, with his latest Every Third Thought just released this past Friday.
Except, from what I've listened to this past week or so as I debate whether to give up around $70 for the show and my time to be in his presence, I just can't bring myself to face him not meeting my expectations on this Kiwi debut.
The thing is, as everyone knows, music tastes are subjective and everyone listens, more or less, with a different ear.
N/A
David Duchovny was recently on screen in David Lynch's return to Twin Peaks.
But Duchovny's blend of dad-rock with basic level rhyming couplets just simply doesn't seem to cut it from what I've listened to online.
And I'm terrified that live, it could be something close to a borderline disaster, and destroy the respect I have for him as a talent.
From Aquarius to Californication, the laconic style he pioneered in those, complete with self-deprecating appearances on The Larry Sanders Show and as transgender Denise in Twin Peaks, the man is nothing shy of an immense talent.
In a recent interview with Indiewire, Duchovny's self-awareness over how he's come to release the music shines out as well, knowing clearly that these stepping stones have led him on a path to musical nirvana.
"Yeah, I probably wouldn't have been able to put an album out if I wasn't in the position I'm in, but that doesn't mean the music sucks," Duchovny said. "There's plenty of great bands that can put out a sh..y album."
His music is apparently redolent of Leonard Cohen, REM and Bob Dylan - if his PR is to be believed. Heady influences indeed.
Yet, with lyrics like "Half my life, By your side, Through thick and thin, Rain or shine" don't exactly seem inspiring - set against a sound that's very much MOR and would not be out of place in the background of a pub, I just can't shake the feeling that his well-meaning intentions and musical desires are slightly outstripping his actual musical ability.
These aren't timeless epithets - and while songs like Every Third Thought from his new album seem to run the gamut between blues and William Shatner style delivery, the idea of this translating to a live atmosphere makes me potentially cringe.
I know I'm opening myself up to criticism and facing comments on what I have ever done - and that's fine. This is, after all, a personal opinion, and it won't matter a jot to those who are going to simply bask in his glow and enjoy what he has to offer.
I'm not jealous of his wide-ranging talents (he writes too), but I reckon he's using his ambition and privilege to get further than his talent will allow currently.
(There's always room for growth, as anyone will admit. And I don't believe this is by any stretch of the imagination an ego project, as he's said elsewhere that he's taking singing lessons.)
There's an earnestness to his live performance that I expect his Kiwi fans will lap up as they stand in his presence this week.
Sure, at the end of the day, others have done it (step forward, Russell Crowe, Kevin Bacon, Billy Bob Thornton) and I genuinely hope that Duchovny's charm and appeal will win out.
But I just can't bring myself to face the possibility that, in this case, the music doesn't maketh the man.

David Duchovny takes in Auckland and Wellington for two tour dates this week.
Well, to coin a phrase, The Truth is Out There - but I sort of wish the musical talent was as well.
Mulder and Scully were heroes to me in my formative years.
