Awkward David Duchovny: I can’t answer that

US actor David Duchovny appeared dismissive on Sunrise this morning during an uncomfortable chat with Samantha Armytage where he lashed out at her, saying “You say that like it’s a bad thing” when she asked him about The X-Files.

The 41-year-old was with co-host David “Kochie” Koch, who nervously laughed through the segment.


She asked how much longer he would be on the longest-running science fiction series when Duchovny shrugged his shoulders and repeatedly said: “I don’t know.”

Armytage finally broke the awkward answer by asking: “So you’ll keep on going?”

He snapped: “You say that like it’s a bad thing!”

“You said, ‘So you’ll keep on going?’ You make it sound worse and worse! 25 years? When are you going to stop already.


“I can’t sit here and answer that right now. The show is airing right now. We just did 10 episodes, it’s hard to answer ‘What’s next?’ because we’ve made 10 really good episodes for the fans right now so rather watch those.”

Duchovny also refused to answer whether he believed in aliens in what was supposed to be a lighthearted interview, suggesting he had answered that question too many times in the past.

“I’m not going to answer that right now,” he told Armytage.

“I’ve probably answered that a million times so — and I’ve given 500,000 yeses and 500,000 noes.”

The only time Duchovny gave the Channel 7 hosts a straightforward answer was when he was asked about his new book.

He is here in Sydney for his concerts including one at Newcastle West tonight.

The American actor is beloved for his long-standing role as conspiracy theorist Fox Mulder in popular science fiction series, The X Files.

But David Duchovny appeared offended on Wednesday when Sunrise host Samantha Armytage questioned the star's character's longevity.

The Golden Globe winner, 57, caught Sam off guard when he claimed her questioning sounded negative: 'When are you going to stop?'

David has portrayed the Fox Mulder since 1993, over 11 seasons and two feature-length films in The X Files franchise.

Sam had initially asked: 'So how much longer do you reckon you can do The X Files for? Or do you want to do it for?'

'I don't know,' David responded, before Sam quickly added: 'So you'll just keep going?'

Not seeming impressed by her statement, the Californication star said: 'You say that like it's a bad thing... just keep going?'

'David, stop, you're teasing me... but how long do you want to do it for?' Sam said, attempting to get the interview back on track.

'I don't know. If I can find a challenge in it and we can get people together to do it and people want to watch it, then it's a live question to me. I can't sit here and answer that right now,' he said.

'I'd rather not focus on what is next. We have just made 10 really good episodes we have just made. I would rather watch those.'

Sam had initially upset the actor, author and singer when she incorrectly stated he'd done three shows in Australia during his current tour, when he had indeed done five.

'No, more than that, five, two were forgettable, apparently?' he joked with the journalist, pointing out her error.

David is currently touring his album 'Every Third Thought', with two shows left in Newcastle and Brisbane this week.
