David Duchovny Will Visit Berklee This Week to Record an Album
His band members are alums, and they’ll record Duchovny’s first studio record Thursday.
David Duchovny—known for starring in The X-Files and Californication—is trying something new this year. The Golden Globe award winner is taking on music and will visit Berklee on Thursday to record his first album.
Duchovny’s band comprises five Berklee College of Music alums, and the new record, titled Hell or Highwater, is slated for release in March 2015 by Boston-based ThinkSay Records, according to a press release.
In addition to recording at Berklee, Duchovny, ThinkSay president Brad Davidson, and producer Colin Lee will also visit a class to talk about the band, the new record, and finding music partners in a shifting paradigm.
While Hell or Highwater is Duchovny’s first adventure in making music, he told Rolling Stone earlier this year, “In my wildest dreams, I would sound like Wilco or R.E.M. I’d put it somewhere in there—if I’m lucky.”
He has two degrees in English, and said he’d been using his poetry chops to try lyric-writing.
Duchovny also told RS that he’d been working on his guitar skills, although he doubts whether or not he was plugged in when he played at a party with Marilyn Manson and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder a couple years ago:
And even if Duchovny himself wasn’t a musician at the time, let’s never, ever forget the song “David Duchovny,” an ode to the actor recorded by Bree Sharp in 1999. The music video is certainly one worth revisiting:

Thanks for the information. This is great news. I'm sorry we're going to have to wait until March to hear him though.

I didn't realise he was only just getting around to recording this album...I thought he's been doing it slowly over the months, but obviously not. I can only wish him the very best of luck with it, even though I admit to being slightly terrified of the finished result!

AUDIO FILES: DAVID DUCHOVNY IS IN TOWN THIS WEEK RECORDING HIS NEW ALBUM, ‘HELL OR HIGHWATER’
Michael Marotta December 10, 2014 3:07 pm Boston News 0 Comments
When it comes to David Duchovny and music, we immediately think back to Catatonia’s mid-’90s post-Britpop hit “Mulder & Scully.” But apparently the X-Files and Californication actor fancies himself a musician in his own right, and will be in Boston this week recording his new album and speaking to students at Berklee College of Music.
We’re told Duchnovy is in town recording his first studio record, titled Hell or Highwater, at Q Division in Somerville. The album is set for March 2015 release via Boston label ThinkSay Records, which last year signed a distribution deal with Caroline. Back in May, ThinkSay posted a teaser clip to one of Duchovny’s songs, “Let It Rain,” which you can preview below.
“I can only compare my music to artists that you know, so it’s going to sound like I’m bragging,” the actor told Rolling Stone over the summer. “But in my wildest dreams, I would sound like Wilco or R.E.M. I’d put it somewhere in there — if I’m lucky.”
Meanwhile, Duchovny’s band is comprised of five Berklee graduates, and the actor will be at the school tomorrow afternoon with producer Colin Lee and ThinkSay president Brad Davidson “to talk to students about the collaboration with the band, the process of making the record, and how to find music partners in a shifting paradigm,” according to a presser.
If there’s one person that can figure out what’s to come for the music industry, it’s Fox Mulder.
