The X-Files' David Duchovny on His 'Shorthand' With Gillian Anderson, Favorite Revival Episode
By Michael Ausiello / December 23 2015, 6:43 AM PST
It’s been 14 years since David Duchovny‘s truth-seeking, pencil-tossing, Scully-crushing FBI Special Agent Fox William “Spooky” Mulder last appeared on the small screen, a drought that will end on Sunday, Jan. 24 with the premiere of Fox’s six-episode revival of The X-Files.
In the following Q&A with TVLine, the 55-year-old actor — and current star of NBC’s Aquarius — reflects on his X-Files past “difficulties” with leading lady Gillian Anderson (yes, we said past), present affection for playing Mulder and the future of the franchise that made him a household name.
TVLINE | How has your perspective on the X-Files franchise changed from when you were first doing the show?
The first time around it was one of my first jobs. I was really just trying to keep my head above water artistically. I think me and Gillian coming back at this point in our lives and in our careers… we’re much better at what we do now. It was really wonderful, for both of us, to recreate these characters with better skills. We probably don’t have as much energy as we use to though. [Laughs]
TVLINE | Do you have a better appreciation for what a gift The X-Files has been to you than maybe you did during the initial run of the show?
I always had an appreciation for it. It was a career-making show. Aside from my gratitude for whatever business it brought my way, it also afforded me a chance to go to work every day. If I ever did not have an appreciation for the show it was probably [during the final seasons] when I think we were just tired, and antsy to go out and do other things. I’m sure there were times when I was dying to get off the show, but it wasn’t because of the show. It was because it was a grind.
TVLINE | And how has your relationship with Gillian changed?
We’ve been good for quite a while work-wise. Whatever difficulties we may have had over the years [stemmed from] what I said earlier about wanting to get off the show… the fatigue and a hot-house feeling of being in the same room with the same people for nine years. We’re good now. We have a shorthand and I really enjoy working with her a lot. That was probably the easiest part of transitioning back into the show was our work together.
TVLINE | You wrote and directed a fair number of X-Files episodes back in the day. Did you have any creative input this time around?
No. When we were originally talking about [a possible revival] we were conceiving of it as 12 or 13 episodes, because that was the [traditional] model. And in that [scenario] I thought I would write one or direct one. But the way it worked out with six episodes, there just wasn’t any room.
TVLINE | Of the six new episodes, do you have a personal favorite?
For me in terms of being an actor, Darin [Morgan]’s scripts — which were funny and whimsical yet very smart and rigorous — were always challenging and fun. And it’s the same this time with [the Morgan written/directed “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster,” airing Feb. 1]. Chris [Carter] really took care of the scope and the action, [but] action’s less interesting for me to play as an actor. You’ve got to be there at night, basically. And you’ve got to run to something or from something. [Laughs] That’s not a knock on Chris’ writing. But Darin’s episodes were always very verbally, often comically driven and thematically twisted. And it’s the same this time.
TVLINE | Could an X-Files miniseries like this become an annual thing?
I don’t see what not. But we don’t want to just make more episodes because we can. I’m not interested in that. And I don’t think Chris is interested in that. If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I’m sure we’d all listen.

The X-Files returns next year with a brand new miniseries consisting of six episodes - some 14 years after the original series ended.
But the show’s star David Duchovny, who reprises his role of Fox Mulder, says he is open to making EVEN more new episodes with co-star Gillian Anderson. YES PLEASE!
But there is a catch…
Asked if the new miniseries could become an annual event, he explained: “I don’t see why not. But we don’t want to just make more episodes because we can. I’m not interested in that. And I don’t think Chris is interested in that.
“If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I’m sure we’d all listen.”
David famously scaled down his role on the show in the final seasons of its original run because he was so eager to do other acting work.
Now, he opens up about clashing with Gillian - who plays Dana Scully - on-set.
“We’ve been good for quite a while work-wise. Whatever difficulties we may have had over the years [stemmed from] wanting to get off the show… the fatigue and a hot-house feeling of being in the same room with the same people for nine years,” he told TVLine.
“We’re good now. We have a shorthand and I really enjoy working with her a lot. That was probably the easiest part of transitioning back into the show was our work together.”
THANK GOD they don’t hate each other because we’re going to need new X-Files episodes for the next 50 years, OK?

Re: David Duchovny on His 'Shorthand' With Gillian Anderson
Now You Can Anticipate David Duchovny’s Favorite Episode from the Upcoming ‘X-Files’ Revival
By Moze Halperin December 23, 2015 11:36 am
Though obviously nobody knows what exactly each episode of the upcoming X-Files revival miniseries will entail, we now — thanks to an interview with David Duchovny in TVLine — know when to look out for the star’s favorite episode. We also know that, as he states pretty clearly in the Q&A, creator Chris Carter’s episodes are not his favorites to film.
In the interview, he discusses his appreciation for Darin Morgan’s scripts in the original series (he wrote four — “Jose Chung’s ‘From Outer Space,'” “War of the Coprophages,” “Clyde Bruckman’s Final Repose” and “Humbug”). Duchovny says they were “funny and whimsical yet very smart and rigorous,” and Morgan’s episode in the upcoming miniseries is likewise Duchovny’s favorite to perform. In keeping with the adjectives used to describe his scripts, the title for Morgan’s upcoming episode (he wrote and directed it) is the funny-and-whimsical sounding “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster”; its air date is February 1, 2016. As for Carter’s episodes, he says:
Thanks to the likes of this review in the L.A. Times, following the screening of the premiere episode of the 6-part miniseries at New York Comic-Con, we know that a. Mulder now has long hair and lives in isolation and is thus pretty much Rust Cohle, while b. Scully works as a surgeon at Our Lady of Sorrows hospital but c. they get back into the game of alien/paranormal investigation when an “internet media sensation” named Tad O’Malley brings them into the merged world of aliens and post-9/11 political conspiracies. “Even Presidents Obama and Bush make archival appearances, Homeland credits style,” notes the L.A. Times. And while the show documents how the passage of time has changed its two main characters, Duchovny details in the interview how he and Anderson’s own personal growth might affect the show:
And of course, despite the fact that he’s already answered the question (with understandable opaqueness), the interviewer asked Duchovny whether there was a chance the miniseries could become “an annual thing” (so…just a series?). Duchovny said, “We don’t want to just make more episodes because [they] can… If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I’m sure we’d all listen.”

Re: David Duchovny on His 'Shorthand' With Gillian Anderson
David Duchovny’s Favorite Episode of the ‘X-Files’ Revival
In a Q&A promoting the upcoming “X-Files” sequel series, David Duchovny revealed which episodes of the series’ return were his favorite, and discussed how working on the series — alongside Gillian Anderson — has changed since the show’s end 14 years ago.
Duchovny told TVLine that the episodes written by Darin Morgan are his favorite in the sequel series — citing the Morgan written/directed episode, “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster” (which airs February 1) as a prime example. “For me in terms of being an actor, Darin [Morgan]’s scripts — which were funny and whimsical yet very smart and rigorous — were always challenging and fun.”
Speaking on the series’ importance to his career, Duchovny said: “I always had an appreciation for it. It was because it was a grind.”
As for returning to the series alongside Gillian Anderson, Duchovny said their working relationship is healthier than it was near the end of the original series: “We’ve been good for quite a while work-wise. Whatever difficulties we may have had over the years [stemmed from] what I said earlier about wanting to get off the show… the fatigue and a hot-house feeling of being in the same room with the same people for nine years. We’re good now. We have a shorthand and I really enjoy working with her a lot. That was probably the easiest part of transitioning back into the show was our work together.”
And could there possibly another season of “X-Files” after next year’s event series? Duchovny doesn’t “see why not,” but notes, “…we don’t want to just make more episodes because we can. I’m not interested in that. And I don’t think [creator] Chris [Carter] is interested in that. If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I’m sure we’d all listen.”

Re: David Duchovny on His 'Shorthand' With Gillian Anderson
‘The X-Files’ season 10: Could we see more new episodes in the future?
December 23, 2015
There has been some back-and-forth throughout the past several weeks regarding whether or not the upcoming six episodes of “The X-Files” (which can be considered season 10) are going to be the last of the franchise once and for all. There are no definite plans to make any more beyond this, yet at the same time, we don’t get the sense that the door is firmly shut and there is zero hope for fans, either.
This sentiment seems to be echoed further now courtesy of series star David Duchovny, who says in a new interview with TVLine that depending on what creator Chris Carter comes up with, they could do something further down the line:
“I don’t see why not. But we don’t want to just make more episodes because we can. I’m not interested in that. And I don’t think Chris is interested in that. If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I’m sure we’d all listen.”
Personally, we’d like to see the series adopt a model similar to “Sherlock,” where they all come back every couple of years or so after they get to do some other work, feeling reinvigorated and ready to do something more with the show. It keeps the demand high in a way that doing full seasons would eliminate, while at the same time keeping everyone flexible and reducing burnout. If the ratings are great for Fox, we can’t imagine any hesitancy on their part to want to go along with this.

David Duchovny on his favorite episode of The X-Files revival
3 hours ago
by: Kevin Fraser
With just a month and a day to go until The X-Files returns to our screens, it's time to start getting very excited about witnessing Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigating the paranormal once again. Much of the old gang will be returning, both on-camera and behind-the-scenes, for six new episodes and TVLine was able to sit down with David Duchovny recently for a chat about all things X-Files, they even got him to reveal his personal favourite of this new batch of episodes.
If he had any creative input on the revival:
On whether The X-Files could return for more episodes:
I hope that The X-Files' return is successful enough to warrent another set of six-episodes as it would be great to see Mulder and Scully back on television every couple of years, but for now, I'm just happy that we're getting anything at all. The X-Files returns to television on January 24, 2016.

Re: David Duchovny on His 'Shorthand' With Gillian Anderson
The X-Files premiere: David Duchovny dishes on his favourite episode in the revival series
The X-Files returns with a revival series on 24 January 2016 on Fox Network. Actor David Duchovny will reprise his role as Fox Mulder, a former FBI special agent assigned to the X-Files, while Gillian Anderson will return as Dana Scully, a medical doctor and former FBI special agent.
Duchovny dished about what to expect and teased if the revival could become an annual event in an interview with TV Line. He said: "I don't see why not. But we don't want to just make more episodes because we can. I'm not interested in that. And I don't think [show creator] Chris [Carter] is interested in that. If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I'm sure we'd all listen."
The actor also discussed his favourite episode in the revival series. "For me in terms of being an actor, Darin [Morgan]'s scripts — which were funny and whimsical yet very smart and rigorous — were always challenging and fun. And it's the same this time with [the Morgan written/directed Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster airing on 1 February]."
"Chris really took care of the scope and the action, [but] action's less interesting for me to play as an actor. You've got to be there at night, basically. And you've got to run to something or from something. [Laughs] That's not a knock on Chris' writing. But Darin's episodes were always very verbally, often comically driven and thematically twisted. And it's the same this time," the 55-year-old actor shared.
He also talked about how his relationship with co-star Anderson changed over the years. "We've been good for quite a while workwise. Whatever difficulties we may have had over the years [stemmed from] what I said earlier about wanting to get off the show.... the fatigue and a hot-house feeling of being in the same room with the same people for nine years. "
"We're good now. We have a shorthand and I really enjoy working with her a lot. That was probably the easiest part of transitioning back into the show was our work together," Duchovny added.

Re: David Duchovny on His 'Shorthand' With Gillian Anderson
'The X-Files' season 10 spoilers, news: David Duchovny discusses upcoming season and names his favorite episode
After 14 long years, Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) are finally returning to television. "The X-Files" revival will have a limited six-episode run airing this January on Fox.
During the New York Comic-Con last October, a group of fans were able to see an advanced screening of the first episode. The screening was met with an enthusiastic response.
Duchovny recently spoke to TVLine to share some of his insights regarding the return of the science fiction series. For Duchovny, "The X-Files" was one of his first acting jobs and Mulder was a career-making role for him. Now, after all these years, he comes back to the show with more acting experience.
"I think me and Gillian coming back at this point in our lives and in our careers ... we're much better at what we do now. It was really wonderful, for both of us, to recreate these characters with better skills. We probably don't have as much energy as we use to though," he said.
Duchovny also revealed his improved relationship with co-star Anderson. The two seemed to have experienced difficulties during the first run of the show. Now, it seems that issues from before have been patched up as Duchovny has nothing but praise for his co-star. He also revealed that he really enjoys working with Anderson.
"The X-Files" actor also revealed that his favorite episode in the upcoming season would be the third episode set to air on Feb. 1. The episode, titled "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster," was written and directed by Darin Morgan. Duchovny revealed that Morgan's scripts "were funny and whimsical yet very smart and rigorous – were always challenging and fun."
"The X-Files" season 10 will only air six episodes. Duchovny is open to making more episodes but claimed that he doesn't want to return just for the sake of doing episodes. Rather, it must come from inspiration and whether there is a good story to tell.
"The X-Files" season 10 will have its two-night premiere on Jan. 24, Sunday and January 25, Monday. The remaining four episodes in the season will air on Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.

'The X-Files' reboot news: David Duchovny talks about reprising role
After 14 years, "X-Files" fans will be in for a treat. The hit '90s series is coming back for a six-episode revival on Fox.
David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their iconic characters Mulder and Scully.
In an interview with TVLine, Duchovny talked about the franchise and what it's like to be stepping into Mulder's shoes again after more than a decade.
The actor said that when he first worked on the series, which premiered in 1993, he was just "trying to keep my head above water artistically" since it was one of his first jobs.
"I think me and Gillian coming back at this point in our lives and in our careers…we're much better at what we do now," said Duchovny.
During the first run of the show, Duchovny quit after the seventh season due to contract disputes.
However, the actor said that he always had an appreciation for the show because not only did it make his career, but it also gave him the chance to go to work every day.
"If I ever did not have an appreciation for the show it was probably [during the final seasons] when I think we were just tired, and antsy to go out and do other things," Duchovny explained.
After working on "The X-Files," the 55-year-old worked on movies such as "Things We Lost in the Fire" and "The Joneses." In 2007, he returned to television on the show "Californication," which ran for seven years.
Duchovny is currently working on NBC's "Aquarius," which is slated to air its second season next year.
For now, it is unclear if show creator Chris Carter will consider doing another season after the show airs its six-episode special, but Duchovny said that if Carter starts thinking about where to take the show and the characters next "I'm sure we'd all listen."
"The X-Files" reboot will premiere on Jan. 24 on Fox.

'The X-Files': David Duchovny Admits There Were Times When He's 'Dying' To Get Off The Show

(Photo : Facebook/The X-Files) "The X-Files" star David Duchovny admitted that there were times during the show's original run when he wanted to leave the Fox series.
Although David Duchovny credits "The X-Files" for giving him a career, he admitted that there were times during the series' original run when he wanted to leave the show.
"I always had an appreciation for it. It was a career-making show," Duchovny told TVLine. "Aside from my gratitude for whatever business it brought my way, it also afforded me a chance to go to work every day."
"[But] if I ever did not have an appreciation for the show, it was probably [during the final seasons] when I think we were just tired, and antsy to go out and do other things," added the 55-year-old actor, who plays Fox Mulder on the hit sci-fi series. "I'm sure there were times when I was dying to get off the show, but it wasn't because of the show. It was because it was a grind."
Duchovny went on to admit that his previous desire to exit the Fox series also created a gap between him and his co-lead star Gillian Anderson, who plays Dana Scully on the Chris Carter-created show.
"Whatever difficulties we may have had over the years [stemmed from] what I said earlier about wanting to get off the show ... the fatigue and a hot-house feeling of being in the same room with the same people for nine years," he said. "[But] we're good now. We have a shorthand and I really enjoy working with her a lot. That was probably the easiest part of transitioning back into the show ... our work together."

I'm not interested in that. And I don't think Chris is interested in that. If Chris is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I'm sure we'd all listen."
Duchovny has expressed his interest in doing more episodes of "The X-Files" as early as May this year.
"I would be open to doing another cycle," he told Entertainment Weekly that month. "I don't know that I could do a 20-episode version of this show at this point in my life, and I don't know that Gillian could. But I think everybody is open ended on what happens after this. Certainly, we didn't bring it back with the idea of ending it."

The X-Files Revival Spoilers: Can Mulder/Scully Stop Monster?
The X-Files Revival Spoilers: Can David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson Mulder/Scully Stop Monster?
(Photo : Ben Hider/FOX)
Back by popular demand, Fox is just a month away from bringing back their iconic sci-fi/horror series. In the upcoming revival of The X-Files, will agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully(Gillian Anderson) find themselves against a "Were-Monster?"
As we previously mentioned,13 years have passed since FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were on the TV screen solving weird and supernatural cases. The reboot of Fox's popular sci-fi series continues with an all-new 6 episode arc. Not only are the two leads back to reprise their iconic roles, creator Chris Carterwill takeover as showrunner once again for the franchise that launched his and many other careers.
In an interview with TV Line, the Aquarius actor dishes on his favorite episode of the upcoming six, "For me in terms of being an actor, Darin [Morgan]'s scripts - which were funny and whimsical yet very smart and rigorous - were always challenging and fun. And it's the same this time with [the Morgan written/directed "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster," airing Feb. 1]. "
Duchovny adds, "Chris [Carter] really took care of the scope and the action, [but] action's less interesting for me to play as an actor. You've got to be there at night, basically. And you've got to run to something or from something. [Laughs] That's not a knock on Chris' writing. But Darin's episodes were always very verbally, often comically driven and thematically twisted. And it's the same this time."
The X-Files returns with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, January 24, 2016, following the NFC Championship Game. The event continues Monday, January 25, 2016 (8pm).

'X-Files' Revival: Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny Talk Reprising Roles
(Photo : Fox) Get the latest on Fox's "X-Files" reboot, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
Gillian Anderson has opened up about reprising her role as Dana Scully in the upcoming "X-Files" revival.
The actress admitted that it was hard to tap into the character again.
"I had this locked sense of her that is stuck somewhere in those early episodes," Anderson told New York magazine, as quoted by Vulture. "So I had to get out of my head the idea that I didn't seem like her at all, because this was the grown-up version of her."
Anderson also shared her thoughts about the show's first few years.
"We were so young!" she said. "What's interesting is that I kind of knew at the time. I was as inexperienced as Scully was. I didn't feel grown up in my body."
Anderson's onscreen partner, David Duchovny, also shared his thoughts about getting back into character as Fox Mulder.
Speaking with TVLine, the actor said: "The first time around it was one of my first jobs. I was really just trying to keep my head above water artistically."
Duchovny continued: "I think me and Gillian coming back at this point in our lives and in our careers... we're much better at what we do now. It was really wonderful, for both of us, to recreate these characters with better skills. We probably don't have as much energy as we use to though."
The actor also teased that there's a possibility that the mini-series would turn into an annual gig.
"But we don't want to just make more episodes because we can," he added. "I'm not interested in that. If [writer] Chris [Carter] is re-inspired to start thinking about where to take the show and the characters next I'm sure we'd all listen."
