Mulder and Scully are getting back to work on a brand new season of The X-Files.

This isn't some underground conspiracy theory from the likes of the Lone Gunmen. Fox finally gave fans the news they'd been hoping for by ordering ten more episodes of The X-Files starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

In addition to bringing back Duchovny and Anderson, The X-Files creator Chris Carter will return as a showrunner and executive producer as well for the 11th season.

A 10-episode order is a huge improvement over season ten, which was given just six episodes total back in 2016. The show's massive ratings success in the US certainly paved the way for an expanded season 11.

Fox has been teasing an announcement about the future of The X-Files for more than a year, with David Madden promising back at the TCAs in January that fans could expect something "soon".

You can safely expect that these new episodes will resolve the season ten cliffhanger where the alien colonists finally arrive on earth after more 20 years of build-up.

X-Files fans' cup certainly runneth over these days. Earlier in April, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson both signed on for a series of audio dramas filling in the events before last year's TV revival.

Fox has ordered another installment of The X-Files.

The 10-episode event series will reunite series creator Chris Carter with stars David Duchovny (Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully). The series will go into production this summer, to air during the 2017-2018 season.

The 2016 event series ended on a cliffhanger—with Mulder near death, and an apparent UFO approaching—but at the time, Carter insisted the plan was always to continue. "It wasn’t just a cliffhanger without a clear idea of where we go," he told us. "That said, even though I had a conversation with [Fox boss] Dana Walden today, talking about doing more episodes, I think the question is how to get it done."

The truth is out there, and soon, new episodes of “The X-Files” will be, too.

Fox announced late on Thursday that 10 more episodes of the show, about two F.B.I. agents who gravitate toward the unexplained, would air in the 2017-18 television season. Production is set to begin this summer.

Fox did not announce details of the show’s plot but said that its two stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, who play the agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, would appear.

Both Mr. Duchovny and Ms. Anderson posted on Twitter about their return.

Mr. Duchovny responded that he had “been ready since ’93.”

“The X-Files” first aired in 1993, running for nine seasons and winning 16 Emmys. It returned for a six-episode mini-series last year, which drew high viewership figures for Fox.

The announcement amounted to a promise kept for Chris Carter, the creator of the show. After the mini-series revival wrapped up with a cliffhanger, he said, “I can tell you, almost without a doubt, we will come back.”

LOS ANGELES—The truth is out there: The X-Files is coming back.

Fox said Thursday it has ordered a second chapter of what it’s calling an X-Files “event series.” The 10-episode series will air during the upcoming 2017-18 TV season.

The 1993-2002 drama about paranormal events and UFOs returned in 2016 for a six-episode run with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.

Fox said Duchovny and Anderson will be back as Mulder and Scully for the new season from creator and executive producer Chris Carter.

Production on The X-Files is set to begin this summer. An air date was not announced by Fox.

The X-Files has been renewed for another 10 episodes, following on from season 10 last year.

The new episodes will air on Fox during the 2017-2018 season, with showrunner Chris Carter back onboard.

Season 10 concluded to mixed reviews from fans and critics, but as The Hollywood Reporter points out, it brought in great ratings. Fox needs more hit dramas, and The X-Files is a sure thing. After all, who doesn’t want to give Mulder and Scully another chance? People would tune in for 10 episodes of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson hanging out in a diner and solving zero mysteries.

The show’s future remains uncertain after season 11, partly due to Gillian Anderson’s flourishing career on several other shows, including American Gods. But so far, the two X-Files leads seem very dedicated to the show that turned them into stars.

The X-Files is coming back. It has been confirmed that the hugely popular sci-fi mystery show has been renewed for another season, which will premiere later this year.



The show's renewal was announced by Fox TV boss David Madden, who confirmed that stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be back, along with the show's creator Chris Carter. "Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators--these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide," Madden said in a statement.

"Chris's creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can't wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter."

The X-Files first returned to screens for a limited-run season in early 2016, after more than a decade away. Although the new season met with mixed reviews, it proved a ratings hit. The season premiere was watched by more than 20 million viewers in the US, and the show was one of the most popular of the year.

The X-Files originally ran for nine years, and clocked up 202 episodes between 1993 and 2002. By the time the last of those original seasons had ended, it had become the longest-running consecutive sci-fi series ever on US broadcast TV. There were also two spinoff movies: 1998's The X-Files: Fight the Future, and The X-Files: I Want to Believe in 2008.

The X-Files is to return for an eleventh season, television network Fox has announced.

Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have both signed on to reprise their roles of Mulder and Scully for ten new episdes - four more than last year's revival.

Series creator Chris Carter will also return in an executive producing role for what fox is referring to an an 'event series.'

There's no current word on exact release date but production is scheduled to begin this summer with a launch expected during the 2017-18 television season.

In perhaps the least surprising news to come out of the television industry this week, Fox has confirmed The X-Files will return for an eleventh season next year.

Or rather a second season within Fox’s on-going “event” series.

When Fox decided to reboot the series, announcing the show’s return in March 2015, showrunner Chris Carter, Dana Walden and Gary Newman, Chairmen and CEOs of Fox Television Group, affirmed that this version of The X-Files would feel like a fresh start for the series. Carter joked in a press release that it felt like coming back from a long commercial break, while Walden and Newman said they were excited to bring the “next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully” to X-Files fans.

Despite Fox ordering 10-episodes for the revival’s second season, the network is still calling it an event series. An event series, which is different from a regularly scheduled program and a mini-series, gives the showrunner and network the opportunity to produce a limited-timed series while still allowing for the possibility of a second or third season in the future.

During a press tour in 2014, CBS executive Jennifer Salke told reporters that the main difference between an event series and a mini-series was the likelihood of that story being able to continue in the future without having to worry about tying the seasons together.

“A lot of the limited series are coming through the series department, or we’re hearing things that feel like they lend themselves to less than 22 [episodes] but could go on season after season,” Salke said, as reported by Screener TV. “Miniseries are usually stories or books or based on something that has a very close-ended feel.”

This isn’t the first time that Fox has talked about The X-Files returning for a second iteration of the event, either. Fox’s president of entertainment, David Madden, told Variety last February that Fox was pleased with the show’s performance and wanted it to return. Carter, who has also been vocal about his desire to bring the show back, told Polygon that fans needed to tell Fox they wanted to see more in order for the show to get another season of paranormal stories.

Clearly it’s worked out for both Fox and Carter, but while fans may consider this the eleventh season of The X-Files, it’s apparent Fox is viewing it as the second season in its limited, event series. That means The X-Files could return for a third season if there’s a demand from viewers and the ratings hold steady, but Fox wouldn’t have to worry about wrapping it up in any way if it decided to cease production.

Regardless of how the network defines it, however, the important part is that X-Files fans will get four more episodes than last season. Production is set to begin this summer, with the series expected to return between the 2017 and 2018 season. That means fans could be seeing new episodes of The X-Files as early as this winter.

Sci-fi fans will be pleased to hear that the X-Files reprisal in 2016 proved popular enough to warrant another series – and this time there will be a full 10 episodes as opposed to six.

I had a feeling this was going to happen. Fox has announced that The X-Files will be back for yet another season. Put it this way, when you’ve got audiobooks that fans are clamoring to buy and listen to you know something is going to happen on the television side of things. The X-Files is one of those shows that just won’t go away because there’s too much audience demand for it. Looks like Mulder and Scully will be with us for an 11th time in yet another revival of the show.

The truth is still out there so it’s good to know that The X-Files is set to return for an 11th series.

The paranormal drama returned to TV screens in 2016 after a 14 year hiatus and the six-episode run was rather well received. So well received, in fact, that Fox has given the green light for an extra four episodes (that’s 10 in total) in the next “event series”.

Fox has commissioned a second 10-episode series of The X-Files event series.

Actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reinhabited their roles as (veteran) FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully for a revival of the paranormal spine tingler in 2016, some 13 years after the pair's original 1993 outing. The truth is still out there, and creator Chris Carter has once again teamed up with Twentieth Century Fox to look for it.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully and Carter will act as executive producer - although some may hope for his return to the director's chair.

"Chris' creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can't wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files," Madden said.

The sci-fi hit ran between 1993 and 2002 but was rebooted for a six-episode run last year.

Mulder and Scully were reunited to once again chase government cover-ups, monsters, mysterious objects in the sky and their son, William.

The revival was poorly received by critics, but still managed to draw nearly 16 million viewers thanks to a devoted cult fan base.

It became the year's second most viewed broadcast drama, and Mr Madden immediately said they were planning a follow-up, working around Duchovny and Anderson's busy schedules.

Production on The X-Files is set to begin during the summer. It will be shown during the 2017-2018 television series, Fox said.

Over a year after reviving The X-Files for a highly-awaited 10th season, Fox announced that a new, 10-episode installment of the sci-fi/drama will premiere either late 2017 or early 2018. Production is scheduled to launch this summer, Deadline reports.

The network didn't reveal any plot details but confirmed that the series' long-running stars, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, will reprise their respective roles as FBI paranormal investigators Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Both the actors tweeted enthusiastically about the return. Anderson posted a playful photo of the duo, writing, "You ready for more of this, @davidduchovny?" Her co-star replied, "Oh yes, been ready since '93."

Though Season 10 ended with a cliffhanger, Anderson told Rolling Stone she was uncertain about the show's future, citing potential scheduling issues. "There's a lot of things that aren't conducive to a long-running or even one more year of a running, multiple-episode TV show in the mix," she said. "So there would have to be some pretty extraordinary circumstances. But maybe. Maybe the success that we've had thus far with the six episodes is enough for extraordinary circumstances to present themselves. You never know."

Nonetheless, series creator Chris Carter felt confident about their chances. "I can tell you, almost without a doubt, we will come back," he told The New York Times last year.

How Fox Can Pull Off Another X-Files Revival

We want to believe.

Break out tinfoil hats and flashlights; another season of The X-Files is on the way at Fox.

After a six-episode revival last year, the long-running paranormal drama will return for what is effectively its 11th season. What’s more, the new season—”event series,” as the network called it in a release—will span 10 episodes rather than six. It’s set to air during the 2017-2018 season, so get ready to hang up those U.F.O. posters and start whistling the theme song. Or, if you were as burned by the revival as many fans were, possibly start wondering if it’s worth it at all.

Granted, the revival was a ratings success last year: it was the No. 2 broadcast drama of its season, and its debut was widely watched. Still, the episodes themselves received mixed reviews; the monster-of-the-week style episodes largely delighted critics, while those tackling the series’s long-running mysteries were widely panned. After decades of lore between the original series and the film sequels, it’s possible the show’s mythology weighs it down more than it titillates viewers anymore.

Our recommendation? Despite the longer season, Fox and X-Files creator and executive producer Chris Carter should keep the focus on the lighter monster fare, and keep the lore to a minimum. Of course, there will have to be some; last year’s finale did, after all, end on a U.F.O. floating over Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson). The solution might be to more or less bookend the season with mythology, allowing the rest to breathe and traipse around with a lighter step. With more episodes to play with, the revival might have a little more time to find a cohesive groove. Here’s hoping, because as long as the revivals continue to draw good ratings, we’ve got a feeling Mulder and Scully won’t be leaving our screens any time soon.

The Truth Is Out There: Fox Confirms the Return of The X-Files

The truth is still out there! Last night, Fox announced plans to bring back The X-Files for yet another season. The 10-episode arc is longer than last year’s revival, which only featured six episodes.

X-Philes can expect David Duchovny‘s Mulder and Gillian Anderson‘s Scully to return to television sometime during the 2017-2018 season, with production beginning this summer.

The lingering question: Will the new season pick up where the last one left off? Viewers were left on the edge of their seats as a dying Mulder and concerned Scully were caught in the tractor beam of a mystery spacecraft. Will season 11 bring a cure for Mulder’s ailment? Will the world be the same after so many citizens were stricken with the same symptoms? And will the crime-fighting duo find their long-lost son William?

Only time–and creator Chris Carter–will tell.

Fox Is Bringing The X-Files Back Again Because We Can’t Get Enough Scully and Mulder

The movie industry isn’t the only place where all of our nostalgic favorites just keep coming back. We’re in a golden age of mining old TV favorites for returns to the delight of their ardent fans, and despite generally mixed reviews on how that’s gone so far, we can’t stop wanting it to happen—which is probably why Fox is bringing The X-Files back for another new, 10-episode season.

The truth is that, despite any misgivings about their respective returns, all these series that have made a comeback—from Gilmore Girls to Arrested Development—have something to love about them that makes the flaws feel more forgivable. And anyway, a disappointing return can’t spoil our love for the originals, so why not at least give it a shot? As far as The X-Files, no matter how hit-or-miss last year’s first revival season was, it’s impossible not to love Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny as Scully and Mulder, and their on-screen chemistry is enough to float any sub-par episode.

Sure enough, the statement from Fox’s president acknowledges the real reason we’ll probably never stop watching: “Chris’ [Carter, series creator] creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.” It seems the fans agree, as the previous season grabbed tons of viewers, which trumps critical opinion any day of the week.

The only reason it even took this long for news of a new season to break was scheduling conflicts, rather than hesitation on the part of Fox or anyone else. Come on, who could not want to watch more of these two?

The X-Files Will Reopen Again For 10 New Episodes

The event series is coming to Fox for the 2017/18 season.



The truth is still out there.

Fox have confirmed that they are once again re-opening The X-Files, with the series slated to return for another 'event' run, this time consisting of 10 episodes.

Series creator Chris Carter is yet again back onboard to oversee things, while stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny are once more reprising their roles as FBI Agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder respectively.

Talk has swirled that Fox were looking to continue making The X-Files after the show's successful return last year, with the six-episode event a huge ratings hit for the network, including a premiere watched by over 16 million viewers. There had been talk of a spin-off featuring newer characters, but ultimately the draw is Mulder and Scully, so it's no surprise to see them back. Fox's broadcasting president, David Madden, said:

"“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files.”

There's no word on exactly when we can expect to see the series, except that it'll be part of the 2017/18 season. Given how well that last one did, though, there's a good chance it'll arrive in that same January slot.
